$1.5 Billion Mega Millions Winner Has Not Claimed Jackpot

The lucky person who defied the 1 in 302.5 million odds to win the $1.5 billion Mega Millions jackpot on October 23 has not come forth to claim the prize. The single winning ticket was sold at KC Mart in Simpsonville, South Carolina, which has become a new tourist spot as visitors stop to take photos of the lucky convenience store.

The winner still has plenty of time to claim the jackpot. In South Carolina, lottery winners are given 180 days from when the ticket was purchased to come forward, allowing the winner until April 21, 2019 to come forward. The winner will have the option of remaining anonymous, as South Carolina is one of seven states that permits winners' identities to remain secret.

The lucky winner won't be a billionaire when they claim the prize though. If they want to be a billionaire, they will have to invest the lump-sum prize of $877.8 million, or choose the annuity payments, which will disperse the full jackpot over 30 years.

If the winner does not claim the jackpot after 180 days, the $1.5 billion will be given back to the states that participate in the lottery. Each state will decide what to do with the money.
